Children are our greatest resourse and there is nothing more disheartening than to see an unhappy child as a result of bullying. Not all kids confide their problems to their parents or teachers. Most of them don't know or haven't learned to 'Tell someone' when they are unhappy. So many kids keep it to themselves and the consequences are sometimes disastrous. Children posting videos on youtube for the world to see and showing the world how miserable they are. It's truly heart breaking. Some children try to handle the situation on their own but lack the skills to do it. We are here to tell you, you're not alone.
A couple of the kids on 'The Team' have been on the receiving end of a bully's outburst due to a weight issue and we as their parents have dealt with it because we have opened up the lines of communication and encouraged them to talk to us about it. This made a huge difference to their lives and they are now telling you to do the same. Their message to you is.. getting bullied? Tell someone! Don't go it alone, get help to resolve it happily.
Is your child overweight? That can cause them to receive nasty comments from bullies too.
The kids on the Team have all been on the Plan for some time whether it be for weight loss, weight maintenance or just good health and we as their parents have taught them all about eating well. Schools give information to kids about eating well too but losing weight safely can be too hard for them without help.
Children need to be told every day they are loved and cherished. They also need to be reminded how very special and 'Unique' they are. 'Unique'? Yes! Each and every human being holds a special place in the world including kids, and without them, there would be a blank space.
There is an old black and white movie called 'It's a Wonderful Life' which describes this so well. I would urge you to get the movie and watch it with your kids and explain the meaning to them if they are very young. This film could make a difference to their way of thinking about themselves.
If they do have a weight issue, the first thing to do is to take them to your local GP and have their weight for height checked. You can then read the book with them. It's easy to read and follow. They will learn they can and should eat 3 good meals a day and successfully lose weight without going to bed hungry. You won't be worrying about them taking food into their own hands and starving in the hope of losing weight either. I think Anorexia would be one of a parent's worst nightmares.
